One of the fundamental questions in biology is how living organisms acquire the energy required for their survival and growth. The energy essential for an organism’s activities primarily originates from the consumption of food. Food, in essence, comprises organic molecules that possess the capability to store energy within their chemical bonds. To understand this process of energy acquisition, we categorize organisms into two distinct types: autotrophs and heterotrophs. Autotrophs, such as plants, are self-sustaining entities that can generate their own energy through processes like photosynthesis, capturing sunlight and converting it into chemical energy. In contrast, heterotrophs, which encompass most animals and humans, depend on external sources for their energy needs, as they are incapable of producing it internally. This distinction in energy acquisition mechanisms is a fundamental aspect of understanding how living things sustain themselves and thrive.

Obtaining energy is a fundamental process for all living organisms. The primary source of this energy is sunlight, harnessed through the process of photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants, and some microorganisms capture solar energy and convert it into chemical energy stored in molecules like glucose. However, this energy isn’t exclusive to these organisms; virtually all living things, whether directly or indirectly, depend on this energy source.

For organisms that do not engage in photosynthesis, such as animals and many microorganisms, the process differs. They acquire energy by consuming other living organisms or organic matter derived from those organisms. Once ingested, the energy-rich molecules, like glucose, within their food are broken down through cellular respiration in the presence of oxygen, yielding the energy required for various life processes. This intricate energy transfer sustains the diverse web of life on our planet, highlighting the interconnectedness of all living things through the universal currency of energy.
